Overview

Purpose of the Position

Under the supervision of the Accounting Manager, the Staff Accountant position demands an individual who is meticulous and detail oriented. The Staff Accountant is responsible for the preparation of month-end journal entries and balance sheet account reconciliation in a timely manner to meet the department’s month end close deadlines.

Responsibilities

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the prepaid amortization schedule and prepare the monthly prepaid journal entries
  • Calculate and record inventory and COGS
  • Prepare month-end journal entries and accruals including deferred rent, bonus accr, payroll related clearing acct.
  • Record fixed assets and depreciation expense and maintain the fixed assets sub-ledger
  • Prepare Inter-company reconciliations
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliation on a monthly basis
  • Conduct variance analysis
  • Perform other job related tasks and duties as required
  • Support year end audit activities
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and carefully follows all applicable federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, CIE, and internal UMA policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicates compliance requirements to students and other staff as appropriate and quickly escalates any compliance concerns to the Compliance department.

 

Qualifications

 

Education/Experience

  • 2-3 years of relevant work experience required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
  • Prior General Ledger experience required
  • Proficient with Excel and other Microsoft programs required
  • Knowledge of applicable software programs (Microsoft Dynamics (GP)/QuickBooks preferred)
  • Knowledge of US GAAP principles required
