Purpose of the Position:

Responsible for, but not limited to, building relationships with clinical site personnel, developing learning opportunities related to desired teaming outcomes, managing all student records, attendance, and grades for UMA campus while delivering quality supervision of the UMA students at the clinical sites (in the hospital and/or in the Skilled Nursing Facility). May be assigned to teach in the classroom environment on occasions.

 

The Clinical Externship Instructor reports to the Program Director.

 

UMA is a nonprofit healthcare educational institution with a national presence. Headquartered in Tampa, Florida and founded in 1994, UMA offers content-rich, interactive online programs as well as hands-on training at our Clearwater, Florida campus. 

  • Anticipated starting salary of $55,000

Key Responsibilities:

 

Functional:

  • Observes students’ competencies in accordance with an approved curriculum and within assigned schedules to assure an appropriate level of student proficiency in the clinical skills
  • Keeps accurate attendance and grading/evaluation records and notifies campus within first hour of the shift of any students who are absent/tardy
  • Meets class at specified time/date and instructs class during daily meet and greet time before or aner class,
  • Prepares for each new cohort of students including but not limited to verification of necessary externship documents for the site, orientation packets/software and is familiar with all relevant clinical skills
  • Adjusts the clinical guidance to the learning style and knowledge of the student, and provides feedback modification ideas to Director of Education (DOE) regarding the content, appropriateness, and length of externship experience
  • Creates a learning environment where students are valued and encouraged to learn.
  • Proactively monitors students' achievement, success and assists with resolution of student concerns to ensure course and program retention and completion.
  • Monitors and evaluates the student's work against stated learning outcomes and works with students so that a full achievement level is attained.
  • Grades students' externship progress in a timely manner.
  • Provides students with feedback in a constructive and positive manner highlighting both strengths and areas in need of improvement.
  • Provides students with an understanding of how they will use clinical skills in a work environment and in the State testing
  • Attends required school meetings (e.g., faculty, in-service, and workshops, program meetings etc.) and regularly meets with Clinical Healthcare Specialist
  • Completes administrative tasks and duties as required
  • Completes all required professional development and in-service activities in accordance with UMA, State, and accrediting commission requirements.
  • Completes and maintains faculty development plans on an annual basis.
  • Regularly evaluate and track student competencies observed during externship experience and communicate outcomes to the campus
  • Performs any additional tasks requested by the School Director or Instructional Supervisor to ensure the smooth functioning and integrity of the school's operations.

 Support Institutional Initiatives

  • Keep current on institutional goals, objectives, and progress
  • Engage in institutional sponsored activities and initiatives as appropriate
  • Lead with courage in support of change initiatives that impact organization
  • Manages and assists in coordinating efforts between departments within UMA

 Compliance:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and carefully follows all applicable federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, CIE, and internal UMA policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicates compliance requirements to students and other staff as appropriate and quickly escalates any compliance concerns to the Compliance department.

Work Experience, Skills & Abilities:

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A clear, active Florida license to practice either practical nursing (LPN) or professional nursing (RN)
  • At least three (3) years of occupational experience with at least 1 year of clinical experience, and one of the following:
    • Have completed a course in teaching adults, or
    • Have at least 1 year of experience in teaching adults, or
    • Have at least 1 year of experience in supervising nursing assistants.
  • Associate’s degree with an equivalent of 15 semester credit hours in the subject field is required
  • Able to professionally communicate in verbal and written English
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other business tools such as Skype and Microsoft Teams
  • Able to support a diverse and inclusive work environment
  • Ability to work in multiple locations within the Tampa Bay area

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with Learning Management Systems
  • Experience with Student Information Systems
  • Experience with synchronous instructional tools
  • Knowledge of and experience with technological tools and software
  • Success in applying adult learning principles and practices to online teaching
  • Inspires students to meet their career goals using career connections and strategies
  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in the subject field

Working Environment:

  • Office Environment/Call Center/Home Office – Must be able to work in the UMA Office
  • Up to 20% of travel required - Valid Driver’s License required
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Demands:

  • Requires long periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer
  • Requires ability to travel
  • Requires occasional bending, stooping and squatting
  • Requires occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.
