Purpose of the Position:

 

An Adjunct Instructor is a faculty member who provides core content instruction to students based upon the UMA standardized curriculum to promote student development and mastery of foundational academic and professional competencies. This position manages student records including attendance and grades, evaluates student performance, provides targeted academic services, implements departmental initiatives and follows institutional policies and procedures while delivery quality instruction and ensuring student satisfaction. An Adjunct Instructor works in tandem with faculty and program leadership to maximize academic achievement, retention, certification, graduation, and placement outcomes and ensure overall health and integrity of UMA programs.

 

The Adjunct Instructor reports to the Program Director. 

 

UMA is a nonprofit healthcare educational institution with a national presence. Headquartered in Tampa, Florida and founded in 1994, UMA offers content-rich, interactive online programs as well as hands-on training at our Clearwater, Florida campus. 

  • Anticipated starting rate of $675 per week

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaches material from approved curriculum in accordance with assigned schedules and deadlines to assure an appropriate level of student satisfaction.
  • Effectively prepares for each class of instruction and demonstrates proficiency with all relevant software, course content and materials.
  • Begins and ends each class at specified day/time as assigned and instructs class for entire scheduled period including meet and greet time before and/or after class.
  • Documents accurate student attendance and maintains records following UMA policy and procedures.
  • Evaluates student coursework against stated learning outcomes and works with students so that a full achievement level is attained.
  • Grades all coursework including assignments and tests, returns all assignments and posts grades in a timely manner.
  • Provides students with feedback in a constructive and positive manner highlighting both strengths and areas in need of improvement.
  • Appraises students of their academic status throughout a course through continuous evaluation and review of formative and summative assessment results.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance in class and is available for small group and individual one-to-one sessions.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive, student-centered learning environment by exemplifying proper decorum and integrity and requiring the same of students.
  • Creates and implements curricular scaffolding tools and materials to match student learning styles and academic needs, supplementing those provided in the core curriculum.
  • Offers/leads tutorial and workshops as needed, required or assigned.
  • Maintains clean, organized and clutter-free classroom with appropriate software/hardware, textbooks and other learning material and equipment readily available for student use.
  • Remains responsive to student needs and student requests for support.
  • Proactively monitors students’ achievement and actively outreaches to at-risk students to support course persistence as well as program retention.
  • Effectively communicates by email, telephone and face-to-face interaction with student, fellow instructors, supervisors, and/or other school personnel.
  • Consistently meets key performance indicators related to student outreach, engagement and documentation.
  • Utilizes data to identify students with historical and/or current underperformance, understand student needs, and provide remediation and intervention matched to those
  • Advises students on matters related to academics, attendance, career readiness and professionalism.
  • Participates in curriculum development and review based upon expertise in subject area, current industry trends and student performance and engagement indicators.
  • Attends and participates in required school meetings and assists program leadership and cross-departmental teams as needed.
  • Communicates with leadership when barriers to student success are identified and then participates in problem solving solutions.
  • Maintains an up-to-date faculty file in accordance with UMA policy, state regulations and accrediting commission requirements including required meetings, in-services and continuing education units.
  • Performs other duties as requested and assigned to ensure the smooth functioning and integrity of school’s operations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and carefully follows all applicable federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, CIE, and internal UMA policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicates compliance requirements to students and other staff as appropriate and quickly escalates any compliance concerns to the Compliance department.

 Support Institutional Initiatives

  • Keep current on institutional goals, objectives, and progress
  • Engage in institutional sponsored activities and initiatives as appropriate
  • Lead with courage in support of change initiatives that impact organization
  • Manages and assists in coordinating efforts between departments within UMA

Compliance:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and carefully follows all applicable federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the Department of Education, accrediting agencies, CIE, and internal UMA policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicates compliance requirements to students and other staff as appropriate and quickly escalates any compliance concerns to the Compliance department.

Work Experience, Skills & Abilities:

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • A clear, active Florida license to practice either practical nursing (LPN) or professional nursing (RN) is required
  • At least three (3) years of occupational experience with at least 1 year of clinical experience, and one of the following is required:
    • Have completed a course in teaching adults, or
    • Have at least 1 year of experience in teaching adults, or
    • Have at least 1 year of experience in supervising nursing assistants.
  • Associates degree with an equivalent of 15 semester credit hours in the subject field is required
  • Academic preparation in the specific courses taught is required
  • Proficient in verbal and written English
  • Able to support a diverse and inclusive work environment

 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with Learning Management Systems
  • Experience with Student Information Systems
  • Experience with synchronous instructional tools
  • Has knowledge of and experience with technological tools and software
  • Success in applying adult learning principles and practices to online teaching
  • Inspires students to meet their career goals using career connections and strategies
  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in the subject field is preferred
